    Aegion Energy Services is seeking a Vice President, Human Resources in our Irvine, CA office.


    The Human Resource Vice President (HRVP) is directly responsible for the overall leadership and coordination of the human resource function and the Staffing function for Aegion Energy Services (AES).   The Energy Services business operates in a high-volume, rapid-paced labor hiring environment; this position must provide industry best practices and  leadership in the continuous improvement and advancement of the systems and processes that support the organization’s business model, which is based on billable man-hours.  This position provides daily strategic HR and Organizational Development leadership to the AES platform, and also collaborates closely with Aegion Corporate HR to ensure clear and consistent process and policy coordination where needed, including implementation of Corporate driven programs,  like Succession Planning, Supervisor and Leadership training, Performance Management, and the annual merit and incentive plan (AIP) planning process.  While this key role focuses on strategic process improvement, and organizational alignment in a rapidly-changing business environment, the HRVP also serves as the point person for all labor compliance and core HR services for AES, provided by the HR team.  This position collaborates closely with the Operations and Safety teams to ensure their HR needs are anticipated and met. 

    This HRVP is a member of the Human Resources Leadership Team (HRLT) and the AES leadership team, and manages two distinct teams- the Human Resources team and the Field Staffing team.

    Essential Functions

    1. Develops and implements strategic initiatives to improve and enhance staffing processes and practices, both to increase the throughput and effectiveness of the current field staffing process and to meet the geographic and services expansion plans for the organization.
    2. Acts as a thought leader and Strategic HR subject matter expert, adding insight and perspective to the Leadership Team on strategic business goals.
    3. Provides leadership to the staff of the AES Human Resource Department and the AES Staffing Team.
    4. Ensures all operations, maintenance, and turnaround staffing needs are met in a highly efficient and timely manner.
    5. Leads the AES onboarding process, which requires close collaboration with Operations, Safety, Payroll and HR
    6. Reviews and makes recommendations to executive management for improvement of the organization's Human Resources policies, procedures, and handbook
    7. Provides advice and facilitation support to the President, as an advisor and sounding board.
    8. Maintains knowledge of Federal, State (especially California) and local employment legislation and regulations, and ensures organizational compliance.
    9. Consults with legal counsel as appropriate, or as directed by the business unit President, on Human Resources matters.
    10. Serves as point person for all employee relations matters for AES.
    11. Recommends, drafts, implements and communicates changes in the organization's Human Resources policies and procedures and ensures that proper compliance is followed.
    12. Assists executive management in preparation and administration of the organization's performance management, merit and bonus plans.
    13. Works directly with the AES leadership team and operations managers to assist them in carrying out their Human Resources responsibilities
    14. Recommends, evaluates and participates in staff development processes for the organization; also leads the succession planning processes.
    15. Participates on special projects for AES, the Aegion HR team, or other parts of the business.




    1. Bachelor's degree in HR, Business, or related field; Masters degree preferred.
    2. SHRM certification (SHRM-SCP, SHRM-CP), or ability to obtain SHRM certification within 12-months of hire.
    3. 15+ years of Human Resources experience with at least 10 years of experience leading an HR team, with proven leadership and staff development experience.
    4. Proven experience leading in a high volume, rapid onboarding, deployment and turnover staffing environment. Experience in industrial maintenance, seasonal agriculture or retail, or other high volume, fast-paced industries is required.
    5. Strategic level business organization/OD skills to assist the company in evaluating the effectiveness of current organizational design, including the HR Department, and in the development of new business units is required.
    6. Strong California employment Human Resources compliance experience required.
    7. Experience leading an organization through annual HR practices, including performance management and goal setting, merit/bonus planning, benefits open enrollment, succession planning, etc.
    8. Exceptional process management skills, with proven track record of driving organizational change, including core system and process improvement, from conception to execution through to cultural acceptance.
    9. Experience serving on an Executive Leadership Team and participating at the strategic level, including acting as facilitator and mediator.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    This position manages all employees of the HR department and is responsible for the hiring and performance management of the employees within the department.

    Work Environment

    This job generally operates in a professional office environment but will require rare visits to oil and gas and chemical refineries. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers and smartphones.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

    This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. This position can require long hours and occasional weekend work.


    Travel is primarily in the West Coast of the United States during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
